How to Choose the Perfect Sofa

A Designer’s Guide to Comfort, Style & Colour

Your sofa is arguably the heart of your living space — it’s where you unwind, entertain, and hopefully properly relax. Choosing the right one is about more than just looks; it’s about finding the perfect balance of comfort, proportion, practicality, and personality. Here’s my designer’s guide to help you choose the perfect sofa for your home.

1. Size and Scale

Start by thinking about where your sofa will sit and how it will interact with the rest of your room. Is it the main anchor piece in your living room, part of an open-plan layout, or tucked into a cosy snug?

Before you fall in love with a sofa online, it’s crucial to measure properly — and not just the width. Consider overall depth and back height, as these can dramatically affect how the sofa feels in the space. A deep, low sofa looks relaxed but can feel bulky in a smaller room, while a more upright style suits tighter spaces and formal layouts.

Think about balance and breathing room. As a rule of thumb:

  • Allow at least 45–60cm of circulation space around the sofa for easy movement.

  • If your room has a focal point (like a fireplace or TV), leave enough distance — around 2.4 to 3 metres — for comfortable viewing.

  • In open-plan rooms, use a sofa to subtly zone areas, but avoid pushing it directly against a wall if you can; leaving a little space behind can make the room feel lighter and more considered.

And don’t forget the access route. Measure doorways, stairs, and even tight corners — many designers have a story about a dream sofa that wouldn’t fit through the door!

The goal is to choose a sofa that feels grounded yet proportionate — one that enhances your room’s flow, not overpowers it.

2. Shape and Style

The shape of your sofa should harmonise with your home’s architecture and interior style.

  • For period properties, consider a more classic silhouette such as a Chesterfield or a scroll arm.

  • In a modern home, you might lean towards clean lines and lower profiles.

  • For mid-century lovers, tapered legs and boxier forms work beautifully.

The key is to choose something that feels cohesive with your space — and timeless enough to evolve as your style does.

3. Fabric and Finish

Next, think about how your sofa will be used day to day.

If it’s in a busy family living space, choose durable, washable, or removable covers. Performance fabrics and clever stain-resistant options are excellent for homes with kids or pets.

For more formal sitting rooms, indulge in a luxurious fabric such as velvet, linen, or textured boucle. These add sophistication and tactility, even in softer tones.

Texture can be just as powerful as colour in creating depth and warmth — a beautifully woven neutral can feel every bit as interesting as a bold hue.

4. Comfort and Cushion Fillings

A sofa’s comfort often comes down to what’s inside:

  • Foam: Firm, structured, and durable — ideal for a contemporary, tailored look.

  • Fibre: Softer and more casual, but needs regular plumping.

  • Feather: Luxurious and ultra-comfortable, though high-maintenance.

For most homes, a foam core with a feather or fibre wrap offers the best of both worlds — supportive yet inviting, with a lived-in comfort that lasts.

5. Colour and Personality

Now for the fun part: choosing your sofa colour.

Many people default to grey, thinking it’s a safe choice — but “safe” can quickly slip into dull. Instead, think about how you want your room to feel.

Do you crave calm and serenity? Opt for soft, earthy neutrals like stone, oat or muted blue.
Want energy and warmth? Try deep terracotta, olive, or teal — timeless shades that feel both modern and joyful.

The sofa is a major investment piece, but it’s also a statement of who you are. Choose a colour that lifts your mood, one that makes you smile every time you walk into the room.

6. The Finishing Touches

Once you’ve chosen your sofa, don’t forget the styling. Layer cushions in complementary tones and textures, drape a throw for softness, and anchor the scene with a rug that ties the palette together.

A well-chosen sofa can transform not only your space but the way you live in it — it’s more than just furniture, it’s the heart of your home.

Whether you love a crisp modern aesthetic or a relaxed, lived-in feel, choosing the right sofa starts with understanding your space, your lifestyle, and your personality. When you get it right, it’s magic — the piece that makes your house feel like home.
